Term Definition
Maintenance level

A requirement amount that ensures investor’s equity in any securities position won’t drop to or below the margin level.

Margin

The amount of money a client borrows from the broker to buy securities.

Margin account

A brokerage account which allows investor to increase the amount of investment by borrowing from the broker.

Margin call

A request by an investor’s broker for additional capital for a security bought on margin when the investor’s equity value declines to the level below the required maintenance margin.

Market capitalization

The total equity value of a listed company, calculated by multiplying the number of outstanding shares of common stocks by the current market price per share.

Market maker

A dealer who has an obligation to give the bid and asked price of a specific security, and is ready for trading at any moment.

Match trading

Security transactions made without auction or negotiation process. Buy and sell the same security at the same price, usually processed by computer.

Maturity date

The date on which the principal amount of a bond or other debt instrument becomes due and payable.

Merger

Combination of two or more companies. Their equities or cash are combined to become one greater company and continues to operate.

Monetary aggregates

The components of a currency.

Monetary base

The monetary base that comprises all issued notes in circulation as well as financial institutions’ reserves held by the central bank.

Monetary policy

The policy to control money supply in order to supervise the pace of economic growth.

Money market fund

A mutual fund that only invests in short-term securities.

Mortage-backed securities

Securities backed by a number of mortgage loans so as to ensure the obligation will be complied. The investors profit from the interest on principal from the mortgage loan repayment.

Municipal bonds

Bonds issued by a state, city or local government.
