The Start-up Visa program was launched in 2013. The purpose of this program is to attract qualified immigrant entrepreneurs to start their business and spur economic growth of Canada. The mandatory requirement is relatively lower than other business programs and the visa application processing time is generally shorter. The applicant must demonstrate that they are innovative applicant and obtain the letter of support from a designated organization.

Application

Eligibility 

  • Age: No age limit 
  • Letter of Support:
    • Obtain a commitment from a designated entity in the form of a Commitment Certificate and Letter of Support
    • The required commitment from a designated entity must meet one of the following
      criteria:  
      • One or more designated angel investor groups confirming to invest at least CAD 75,000 in total in a qualifying business, or   
      • One or more designated venture capital fund confirming to invest at least CAD 200,000 in total
        in a qualifying business, or  
      • A designated business incubator confirming that it is accepting the applicant into its business incubator program.  
  • Education: No minimum requirement 
  • Language: Meet the minimum requirement of CLB 5 in English or French
  • Proof of funds: Have sufficient fund to support you and your family after you arrive in Canada
  • Scoring: No scoring requirement

Accompanying Family Members 

  • Your spouse or common-law partner, and 
  • Your dependent child under 22 years old

Canada’s Start-Up Visa Program offers permanent residence to qualified immigrant entrepreneurs.

 

2. How long does it take for an intending immigrant entrepreneur to go through the process?

If an entrepreneur has a viable start up business project, it will take about 4-6 months to secure a commitment certificate and a letter of support from a designated entity. Once a letter of support is received, the application for permanent residence can be submitted. It will take approximately 18-months to finalize the application to visa issuance.

 

3. Can I come to Canada before permanent residence visa granted?

Yes, applicants can initially come to Canada on a work permit supported by their designated Canada-based investor or business incubator, before qualifying for permanent residence once their business is up and running.

 

4. How do an applicant qualify for a permanent residence via this program?

The applicant must incorporate a business in Canada and be actively involved in the operation and management of the business in Canada.

 

5. If I immigrate through the SUV Program, what happens if my business fails?

If your business fails, it doesn’t affect your permanent resident status.
