What is the process of getting a Canada Open Work Permit for HK Residents

Have you been looking for the process of getting a Canada Open Work Permit for HK Residents? You have come to the right place, then. Here, we tell you the detailed process you need to follow to get the permit without any hassles. On February 8th, 2021, the Canadian Government announced how HK residents could get Canada Open Work Permit. This work permit is valid for 3 years, and gives a great opportunity for well-qualified residents from Hong Kong to start their career in Canada.

Who can apply for the Canada Open Work Permit?

Canada has recently launched this new work permit process to woo well-qualified residents from Hong Kong. Therefore, the preference is for people who have completed secondary education. Here are the eligibility criteria that HK residents have to fulfill to apply for the Canada Open Work Permit:

  • Should have a valid passport issued by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) or the UK to a British National Overseas
  • Should have graduated within 5 years of applying for the Canada Open Work Permit from either of these programs
  • oA degree from a recognized post-secondary learning university in Canada or any other country
  • oA 2-year diploma course from a recognized post-secondary learning university in Canada or any other country

Applicants need to note that the relevant education authorities in Canada will check degrees or diplomas given by colleges or universities outside Canada before considering them to grant the Canada Open Work Permit.

What are the documents needed for applying for this open work permit?

All HK residents who wish to apply for the 3-year Canada Open Work Permit should ensure that they have the following documents ready to get their permit without any delay:

  • Application forms – duly signed and filled
  • All documents pertaining to their civil status
  • All copies of educational certificates, and proof of enrolment from the authorized post-secondary institution
  • Copy of valid HKSAR or British National Overseas passport (ensures that you take copies of all pages of your passport)
  • Photograph (digital copy)
  • Copy of your resume with details of your employment history; you don’t need to have a job offer from a company in Canada to apply for this open work permit

Cost involved in getting an open work permit in Canada

If you are applying for Canada Open Work Permit, you need to know how much it would cost you for the process to be complete. There are two points that you have to remember, in this case. They are:

  • Processing fees of $255CAD needs to be paid for an open work application in Canada; however, this is valid only for those applicants who don’t stay in Canada
  • Applicants in Canada need not pay for these processing charges

Is the validity fixed at 3 years?|

While the Canada Open Work Permit comes with a validity period of maximum 3 years, it is dependent on your passport’s expiry date. For example, though you may have an open work permit in Canada for 3 years, you cannot stay in the country if your passport expires within 6 months of getting the permit. So, your open work permit is valid for 3 years or till the date your passport expires – whichever is earlier.

Things to do in the current COVID scenario

You can continue to apply for your Canada Open Work Permit as usual though travel restrictions are in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once you have a valid work permit and a job offer from a Canadian company, you can plan for your travel accordingly, so that you can start work immediately after completing your mandatory 14-day quarantine in Canada.
